Please post the FPA report, and any PHP or debug errors (if any) that are showing on screen.

Disable the Modals plugin. Do the problems remain (i.e. with no styling of the back end). This is to rule out Modals being the contributing factor.
The no-styling thing could come down to the often (recently) reported double gzip issue. See https://kuneze.com/blog/110-joomla-double-gzip-problems for more tips on how to resolve that.
